AirPods are a popular choice for wireless audio, but when used with Orum’s cloud-based VOIP dialer, they can introduce unexpected call disruptions due to how Apple's ecosystem handles device switching. This guide explains why these issues occur and guides how to minimize them.
AirPods are designed to seamlessly switch between Apple devices that are signed into the same iCloud account. While this is convenient for personal use, it can create problems in a professional setting:
Example: If you're on a call using AirPods with your computer and a notification appears on your iPhone or iPad, the AirPods may automatically switch to that device.
Result: You may be disconnected from your Orum session, requiring you to end the call, refresh your browser, and rejoin.
Even a brief switch can cause you to:
Lose audio
Miss parts of your conversation
Drop the call entirely
These audio disruptions are inconsistent and difficult to control, affecting call quality and professionalism—especially in high-volume or client-facing environments.
For the most reliable calling experience:
Use a wired headset/headphones connected directly to your device.
This removes the risk of interference from other Apple devices and provides consistent audio quality.
To reduce the chances of interruptions while using AirPods, you must:
Do this on all Apple devices that use the same iCloud account.
On iPhone/iPad:
Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
Tap the ⓘ (info) icon next to your AirPods.
Tap Connect to This iPhone/iPad.
Choose When Last Connected to This iPhone/iPad.
On Mac:
Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Bluetooth.
Click the Options button next to your AirPods.
Change Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac.
Click Done.
Due to normal Bluetooth signal degradation, regularly refreshing the Bluetooth connection can help maintain call quality.
Instructions for Mac:
To Forget AirPods:
Open System Settings (or System Preferences) > Bluetooth.
Find your AirPods in the device list.
Click the “ⓘ” or “Options” button.
Select Forget This Device > Confirm.
To Re-Pair AirPods:
Put your AirPods in the case and open the lid.
Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white.
On your Mac, return to Bluetooth Settings.
Select your AirPods from the list and click Connect.
Instructions for Windows PC:
To Forget AirPods:
Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
Locate your AirPods.
Click on them and choose Remove device > Confirm.
To Re-Pair AirPods:
Put your AirPods in the case, open the lid, and press/hold the setup button until the light flashes white.
On your PC, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
Click Add Bluetooth or other device > Select Bluetooth.
Choose your AirPods from the list and follow on-screen instructions.
Issue | Solution |
Audio switches to another Apple device | Disable automatic switching on all devices |
Bluetooth degradation | Forget and re-pair AirPods weekly |
Unreliable audio quality | Use a wired headset for optimal performance |
*** If you experience ongoing issues even after following the above steps, we strongly recommend transitioning to a wired headset for uninterrupted calling and the best performance with Orum’s dialer.
